Who We Are

Safe Harbors is a course developed by My Story Matters, a 501c3 charity organization, that promotes healing, inspires hope, and celebrates courage in everyday heroes by engaging them in a process that helps them reflect, recount, record, and reframe their stories.

Safe Harbors provides adults and children alike a curriculum dedicated to showing people from all walks of life, circumstances, races and identities that “YOU are the hero in YOUR journey of life”. Through a step-by-step process, taken at their own pace, each person can gain the tools and resources necessary to help captain their own story and rise to the challenge of creating a future they can be excited about.

We hold a B.E.A.C.O.N for individuals to captain their story by challenging them to take ownership of their past and coaching them to create a future they are excited about.

What We Do

Our 11-step evidence based curriculum is designed to teach core values and life skills that are engaged in:

Flexibility allows for individuals or groups to participate online, in-person through technology or with paper and pencil. This is designed to ensure everyone participating has an individual journey to take the lead in their own story.

Course Objectives

Through the Safe Harbors Course we build resilience and confidence while helping all involved become goal-oriented members of society that value their relationships. This course accelerates the reentry success by helping each individual become empowered with the tools they need to take ownership of their story and make the necessary changes to their lives.

We prepare the learner to learn anything they need to become the best version of themselves. They will not only dream of second chances, they will believe that they are possible.

It has challenged me to examine myself and begin to answer the question of what do I really want out of my life.

Anti-Learner Dilemma

Current studies show that change is most difficult because 60% of incarcerated individuals have Anti-Learner tendencies. Those tendencies mean they:

Don’t believe they can learn
Cannot recognize solutions and tools for change
Do not understand how their choices got them to where they are
Do not see a path to anything different

We know they are capable of learning. They need tools and resources to empower them to learn. Our Safe Harbors course engages each learner in a self reflective model that leads them in taking ownership of their story in the past, present, and future. We empower them to design a future they can be proud of.
